Mainei Kinimaka

With the ocean as some of her earliest memories, Mainei’s childhood was filled with surf and sand. Growing up on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai, Mainei and her sister Maluhia learnt to surf as soon as they could swim. Stoking their passion for the sport and encouraging progression was her father, big wave legend, Titus Kinimaka. From longboards to shortboards, stand up paddling and tow in surfing, Titus made sure the Kinimaka sisters always managed to find new respect for boardriding and how much there is to love about the ocean.

Finding her competitive spirit at an early age, Mainei claimed early comp wins at the Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic, giving her the opportunity to spend a little time with one of her idols, Andy Irons.

As a recent high school graduate and with the world as her oyster, Mainei has decided to dedicate her gap year to chasing the QS tour circuit.

Growing up surrounded by Kauai’s ample natural beauty, it is no wonder that one of Mainei Kinimaka’s favourite things to do when she’s at home is exploring the abundance of hiking trails on offer.

On her most recent adventure, Mainei and close photographer friend Bryanna Bradley hit the lush Hanakapi’ai Falls trail, a moderately challenging route which winds its way through the spectacular island landscape.

Scroll down for their hiking guide and trail essentials, plus a gentle reminder to a) get outdoors or b) book a ticket to Kaua’i asap. Or both.

I love to switch up my training by taking it outdoors, and one of my favourite ways to do that is hiking! So, I’m going to share one of my favourite hikes on my home island of Kauai on the Nā Pali Coast Trail.

Hike: Hanakapiai Falls & Beach

Distance: 8 Miles round trip to the falls, 4 Miles round trip to the Beach

Location: North Shore

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

Anytime I go hiking, I always make sure I pack the essentials before I begin. These include a large insulated water bottle, a good pair of running shoes, a hat and sunscreen for sun protection. Once that’s in order I am ready to go!

The hike starts at the most northwestern point of the island and will take you two miles to the scenic Hanakapiai beach. Or, if you’re feeling up for a challenge, four miles to Hanakapiai falls at the base of the valley. The first two miles cover the beginning of the famous Kalalau trail stop and enjoy the view at the half mile marker, as this is the only way you can see the Nā Pali Coast without a boat or a helicopter.

As you descend onto the beach, you’ll come across Hanakapiai stream, which you will need to cross to get to the beach and continue to the falls. The stream is normally very easy to cross during summer months, but take caution when crossing if it’s recently rained and the water level is high. Do also read and obey all posted warnings. Hanakapiai beach has no lifeguard and is known for its unseen currents and hazardous shore break, so swimming is typically only recommended in the summer.

The next two miles will take you straight into the heart of the valley. You’ll follow along the river through lush forests until you reach one of my favourite waterfalls on Kauai. The falls are so high you might leave with a sore neck from trying to look all the way to the top! Make sure to bring a lunch and dig in at the base of the falls, and don’t even think about leaving without taking a plunge into some of the freshest and chilliest water on island.

It’s no secret that the Hawaiian islands are one of our favorite pieces of P A R A D I S E. We feel most at home when we visit and struggle with the concept of returning to our day to day lives when we eventually have to leave.

Imagine then, the incredible week we had on Kauai with one of the largest gatherings of #ROXYgirls to date for our Spring campaign. A magical week of not only soaking up mother natures finest but sharing stories and laughs between a team of incredible women.

Late last year we packed our bags (including some very thick wetsuits) and headed as far north as our travels have ever taken us, into the arctic circle and into the dramatic scenery of Norway’s Lofoten Islands. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure delivered a chance to see the Northern lights, soak up some Viking heritage and score a few icy Scandinavian waves.

Rather than we tell you about it, we asked Mainei Kinimaka to break it down for you.

A #ROXYSneakPeek Behind our Photoshoot in Norway with Mainei Kinimaka

After the ROXY Pro France last October, Steph, Kelia, Monyca and I went on a European adventure I’ll never forget. Our travels took us from Northern Norway’s sub-zero temperatures of the arctic circle to the desert heat of the Canary Islands. This was my first ever international shoot with ROXY, so I brought along my camera to document our journey. There are too many moments to count that were amazing, crazy, and hilarious, but here are some of my favorites!

You know the saying, “It’s about the journey, not the destination?”. This was absolutely the case on our way to Unstad, Norway. After 4 flights, we arrived in the small town of Bodo. From here, our entire crew walked through the town from the airport to the dock, where we would take a ferry to the Lofoten Islands.

1. On our way to the dock we stopped to have breakfast at the only restaurant in town, a tiny orange building on a jedi serving up freshly made heart-shaped waffles with berries and syrup. It was an adorable little spot with lots of friendly locals who gave it a homey feel. These were the best waffles I’ve ever had and maybe ever will.

2. The four hour ferry ride from Bodo to the Lofoten islands was simply breathtaking. The ship was beautiful so we did some shooting on the bow as we sailed passed an abundance of tiny islands, and the sea was the glassiest I’ve ever seen. On one side of the ship we could watch the sun setting over the lofoten islands, and on the other side we could watch the full moon rising over the sea.

3. After driving from the dock we reached the tiny town of Unstad. We were warmly welcomed by the family at the Arctic Surf Camp, and after dinner we stepped outside to witness the most amazing sight, the northern lights! Our entire crew was in awe and we yelled in excitement at every bright green flare that appeared in the sky. I still can’t believe how lucky we were to see the northern lights only about an hour into arriving in the arctic circle.

4. Surfing in the arctic circle was something I’d never imagine myself doing. The beach was covered in ice and frost, so we suited up in our 6 ml wetsuits with booties and hoods. Just walking across our lawn to the shore turned my feet completely numb. It was freezing but so worth it!

5. By far one of the weirdest, but funniest, experiences we had on our trip to norway happened late at night on our last day in Unstad. It was nearly 1am at night and all the girls were in our rooms, jokingly talking about norwegian ghost stories and tales of trolls. Steph was really riling us all up about it so we all decided to put on our coats and walk around town looking for the “little people”. The minute we step out of our rooms to go down stairs we hear a pounding on our door and we absolutely freak out, screaming and running back up stairs. Sis runs into her room, locks her door, and calls her husband, Joe. Steph, mons, and I have our moment of courage and walk down stairs to see what’s there. It may sound like we were over reacting, but you have to understand that Unstad is in the middle of nowhere, and our house was on the beach, a fair distance from the rest of the town. Only about 30 people live there and they were definitely all sound asleep by now, so who could be knocking at our door in the middle of the night?

We cautiously open the door to find a group of teenagers eagerly standing on our doorstep. After some explaining (and teasing about our screams upstairs) we found out that they were all attending a gap year program in the lofoten islands where you learn how to surf. They said they saw our posts on instagram and knew exactly which house we were staying in because it was the only one with a trampoline on the lawn. They drove for hours, all the way to Unstad to come meet us and invite us to go night surfing with them. It was one of the coolest moments ever. I got to meet all of these norwegian girls my age who were so passionate and committed to surfing that they put on those huge wetsuits every day to surf in arctic waters, even at night!

It’s finally June, which can mean multiple things, but if you’re north of the equator you’ll understand our excitement. Summer is a matter of days away and we are busily planning out our beach day essentials in preparation for the long, lazy days to come.

Monthly Mixtape: Mainei Kinimaka

One key element has to be the perfect playlist. From cruisy road trippin‘ weekends to bonfires on the beach with your crew, and seemingly endless days of waves in between, you need the tunes to match.

Look no further - we asked Mainei Kinimaka to help us out and what she has compiled is beyond the best Summer mix we’ve heard in awhile. Get set to make the next 44 tracks the soundtrack to your best 100 days of sunshine yet.

In the week leading up to the ROXYpro Gold Coast, we were eagerly putting the finishing touches on a plan to reconnect with our friends at Herewith Mag for a special shoot that had been in the wings for a while.

Finally the morning arrived and before the sun had stretched above the horizon, we were Byron bound with a few of our favorite boards, a slew of our new bikinis and our girl, Mainei Kinimaka, all set for a day of shooting.

From first to last light, we were graced with good weather (we managed to snag the only sunny day in a week of stormy skies and tropical down pours), good vibes with the team behind the lens and that trademark Byron Bay charm that always seems to deliver some untold magic.

If you’ve managed to pick up the latest copy of Herewith Magazine, you’ll have noticed Issue 003 is dedicated to the theme, Intuition. A compelling topic when it connects to our love of the mountain and the wave and the instinctive understanding that guides decision making when we trust it enough.

To the Sea with Herewith Magazine and Mainei Kinimaka

That very consideration is what has been passed down through generations of Hawaiians, including Mainei Kinimaka’s legendary family - instilling a deep and resounding pursuit of awareness and respect for the ocean, beyond that of Mainei’s peers.

While we were watching Steph chase down her 2017 #ROXYpro Gold Coast victory, hundreds of girls rolled out their mats on Rainbow Bay beach for the #ROXYfitness event.

Rain, Hail or Shine at #ROXYfitness Gold Coast

Despite the low pressure system bringing the rain, spirits were high as we kicked off the 7am start with yoga on the beach.

The view of pumping waves rolling past as we saluted the sun (hidden behind a few clouds) brought a great energy to the yoga session as did the partner yoga which also gave us a few laughs as we stretched with a buddy.

With the #ROXYpro on hold for the boys to complete a few rounds at the #QuikPro, we decided to escape the craziness of Coolangatta for the morning and take a day trip further down the coast for a few uncrowded waves and some downtime with the team.

Cooling off in Cabarita during the #ROXYpro

Our strike mission began early with Mainei, Bruna, Lisa, Bianca and Lee-Ann strapping boards and packing cars with all the essentials before 6am, and after a quick coffee stop, we were fueled up and ready to hit the highway.

Cooling off in Cabarita during the #ROXYpro

It didn’t take us long to feel like we were miles away from the hustle and bustle of Coolangatta, with the urban sprawl slowly melting into the coastal rainforest lining the highway.

Cooling off in Cabarita during the #ROXYpro

In no time we were parked at the Cabarita headland and taking in the uninterrupted views along the dramatic rocky coastline of the morning surf conditions. After a quick decision as to where we would make our camp for the morning, we promptly unpacked the cars and set off down the beach.

Lee-Ann and Bianca were the first ones to hit the water, carefully selecting their weapon of choice from our collective quiver (naturally, we packed for all conditions), with Bruna close behind. The girls were spoiled with an empty line up to share and wasted no time in giving passers by a reason to stop and watch their enviable skills.

As the girls started to come back in from the surf, the subject soon turned to lunch and where to find it. We took a short walk from the beach and stumbled across a sushi bar that seemed to answer everyone’s cravings.

Within minutes of devouring a few hand rolls and gyoza, we were told that the perfect spot to relax on a sunny day in Cabarita was Halcyon House, and given it was just a five minute walk away, we just couldn’t resist.

A refreshing spritzer and plenty of laughs later, we decided to pack up the cars again and head back to Snapper Rocks, just in time to catch Steph set the super bank on fire, catching four barrels in one heat.
